Explanation of Services

Black Hills Parrot Welfare and Education Center, Inc. was designed with a dual purpose.

  • A)First to meet the immediate and long term needs of the birds relinquished to their care.
  • B)To educate the public and other professionals of the responsibility to proper avian care.

Upon intake of a bird, care providers obtain all necessary relinquish forms and all possible history on each incoming bird. Incoming birds will then be placed in quarantine and a file ( health, medical, history etc..) on the bird started.

Quarantine shall last no less than 45 days from the date the last bird was placed in the quarantine room. At the earliest possible time a visual check of the birds overall health and condition, along with weight documents shall be performed and any immediate concerns will be addressed.

Time in quarantine shall include: Blood work to check for all pertinent diseases, DNA information, daily observation, diet adjustments, weight monitored as needed, and to prepare the birds for routines they will experience in the general population.

All center staff and volunteers that perform duties affecting the welfare of the birds are certified by the center through extensive classroom education. They are required to pass a test that pertains to the level of care they provide.

Daily care of resident birds is performed by qualified staff and outside volunteers.

Individual dietary needs of resident birds are dictated by qualified staff and periodically reviewed by veterinarian professionals.

Housing is to be accomplished by keeping like species in separate rooms.,Where special needs of that species can be met.. (room temperature, humidity, diet etc..) Species rooms will have quality cages to house each bird during feeding and sleep time. Full spectrum lighting, separate temperature controls and isolated air purification system are also part of each room. Each room is designed with an outdoor aviary connected to provide 4-8 hours of outdoor enrichment. (weather permitting)

All birds placed into general population shall spend no less than 4 months to evaluate special needs, attitudes, behavior and health before being considered for adoption.

The centers adoption procedures are covered under a policy by itself and includes a potential adopter completing a pre- adoption screening, bird basics class, on site training, a home approval, staff observation of compatibility bond between adopter and bird and follow ups.

Center funding is accomplished through public donations, fundraisers, membership, grants, on and off-site education, adoption fees, retail store sales, facility tours, and corporate donations.
